KAREN WAY ART GALLERIES
CREATURES: REAL OR UNREAL
FIVE ELEMENTS: METAL, WATER, FIRE, EARTH, WOOD
Karen self-taught herself html and graphic design starting in 1995. You might call her training a night school, except it was at her kitchen table every night after dinner. She’d click every menu option on the graphics software to learn how it worked. HTML was much easier and all she needed was the HTML syntax and a Notepad application. Within a year, she started a career in web site and graphic design that took her to the next level. Now she does this for the fun of it.
In recent years, Karen has developed an ability to do what is called automatic drawing. It is also called surrealist automatism. Wikipedia defines it as a method of art-making in which the artist suppresses conscious control over the making process, allowing the unconscious mind to have it’s sway. The PRETEND KIN series was created by Karen using this process, though for her it’s not a process really. She simply puts her pen lightly to the paper and without looking the lines are drawn. When Karen puts her pen down, she sees little people and creatures in the lines she drew. She’s painted costumes for them using Photoshop, so now they’re happy to be seen by all.
Karen’s creations called FIVE ELEMENTS and CREATURES: Real and Unreal are made from travel photos she took in China, France, Peru, Argentina and the US. She digitally alters the pictures in Photoshop and most of them were taken with a vintage Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3 camera with a Leica lens.
Karen hopes you enjoy her art creations as much as she enjoys creating them!
